Weed Management in Ferny Creek: Local Conditions and What That Means for Your Property

Weed management in Ferny Creek is dominated by three species: English ivy (Hedera helix), sweet pittosporum (Pittosporum undulatum), and blackberry (Rubus fruticosus aggregate), all of which are declared environmental weeds under Yarra Ranges Council's weed list. Ivy is the most persistent. It has no effective natural predator, climbs mountain ash stems to 20 m and beyond, and transforms large sections of garden and bush edge into monoculture mats. Effective control requires severing climbing stems at chest height, allowing the upper portions to die before removal (pulling live ivy from trees strips bark), and then follow-up treatment of the ground mat with cut-and-paint or foliar herbicide. Regrowth from cut stems must be treated within three months or the root mass recovers. Sweet pittosporum self-seeds prolifically in the damp, shaded conditions of the Ferny Creek understorey and is banned under Yarra Ranges bylaws. Seedlings appear in every garden bed adjacent to remnant bush edges and grow to screening height within two seasons if not pulled. We identify and flag these during routine visits because the line between "garden pittosporum" and the environmental weed is size and species. Owners are sometimes unaware their screening plant is a notifiable weed. Blackberry follows disturbance: it establishes on cleared ground, along fence lines and at the base of retaining walls, and its root crowns survive most surface removal attempts. Drill-and-fill or cut-and-paint with a residual herbicide at the cambium is the most reliable control on established stems.
