Weed Management in Upper Ferntree Gully: Local Conditions and What That Means for Your Property

Weed pressure in Upper Ferntree Gully lawns and garden beds reflects both the soil character and the suburb's position against the national park. On lower-suburb properties with clay subsoil, winter grass (Poa annua) and capeweed (Arctotheca calendula) are the consistent lawn problems. Both germinate in the cool, wet conditions from March onwards and establish rapidly while kikuyu and couch are semi-dormant. Pre-emergent herbicide applied in late February gives the best suppression of winter grass, but the timing is critical and easy to miss. On upper-suburb properties with acid forest soils, oxalis (particularly Oxalis pes-caprae) and bindi-eye (Soliva sessilis) are more common; both are prolific seeders and need consistent pre-emergent treatment combined with physical mulching of bare bed areas to prevent re-colonisation. English ivy is a persistent problem across the suburb wherever fence lines adjoin the national park corridor. Ivy encroaches from the park edge and from neighbouring properties and can cover garden beds in a single season without intervention. The 'Protecting the Dandenong Ranges' project has specifically targeted English ivy, sweet pittosporum, and blackberry as weed species emerging following the 2021 storm damage to the national park. For private-property weed management adjacent to the park, there is a genuine obligation to avoid using herbicides that may run off into the park boundary or the Corhanwarrabul Creek catchment. We use targeted spot-application rather than blanket spraying on park-edge properties.
