Assessment
We look at what species the timber is, how big the rounds are, how knotted they are, where the splitter can be towed to, and where you want the stack to end up.
Itemised Estimate
Priced per property, because a stack of straight messmate and a pile of knotted blackwood are not the same job. Splitter hire appears as its own line rather than hidden in the rate. Estimates are adjustable if conditions on the day differ.
Scheduled Visit
You get a confirmed date. We work around the declared Fire Danger Period and we do not run machinery on Total Fire Ban days.

Rounds split to length, timber stacked where you asked, bark and chips cleared, hard surfaces blown off, and the site left safe to walk through.
Seasonal Considerations
Book splitting in spring or early summer. Split eucalypt needs at least twelve months under cover before it burns well, and the denser hills species often want eighteen months to two years, so timber split in October is realistically for the winter after next. Spring also gives the best access, since a splitter has to be towed to where the rounds are and hills tracks that are workable in November frequently are not in July. Through summer we work around the declared Fire Danger Period and we do not run petrol machinery on Total Fire Ban days.

What is not included, and what we refer out
Wood splitting is our own work, carried out by our own crews on a hired splitter. Several things that sit close to it are not, and it is cheaper for everyone if that is clear before an estimate goes out.
- Firewood supply and delivery. We do not sell firewood and we do not cart it in. We process timber that is already on your property.
- Felling and full tree removal. Pruning and reduction within safe reach is ours, through our arborist and tree work. Climbing, elevated work platform and full felling go to specialist partners, and stump grinding is arranged through trusted specialists.
- Bucking a whole trunk from scratch. Cutting back oversized and knotted rounds is included. Processing a felled trunk into rounds in the first place is tree work and is priced separately.
- Carting the timber off site. Offcuts and bark are cleared from the working area. Removing material from the property runs through waste removal as its own line, or through mulching and chipping where the material is better turned into mulch.
- Emergency and same-day callouts. We do not run them, for any service. If a tree has come down on a building, across a road or onto powerlines, call the SES on 132 500 first.
Why there is so much timber to deal with up the hill
Two things put rounds on the ground in the Dandenong Ranges far more often than they do on the corridor flats: the canopy and the wind. The hills carry mountain ash, mountain grey gum, messmate, silver wattle and blackwood on deep gradational clay loam with more than 1,000mm of rain a year, which is why the trees get as large as they do. Large trees on a wet, sloping block shed limbs, and a strong north-westerly in a wet winter brings whole ones down. Many hills properties also have no mains gas, so a wood heater is not a lifestyle choice there, it is the heating.
What that combination produces is a very specific problem: a trunk in rounds, sitting somewhere inconvenient, too heavy to move by hand and too valuable to pay someone to take away. Splitting on site solves it in one visit, and it is usually booked alongside tree services that created the timber in the first place, or a seasonal clean-up of everything else the same storm brought down.
Timing matters more here than most people are told. Split eucalypt needs at least a year under cover before it burns properly, and the denser hills species commonly want closer to two. Timber split in spring is for the winter after next. Timber split in May is for looking at. Access matters just as much, because a towable splitter has to physically reach the wood, and a track that a vehicle handles comfortably in November is often not one it should be on in July.
