Weed Management in Sassafras: Local Conditions and What That Means for Your Property

Yarra Ranges Council has documented over 200 environmental weed species in the Dandenong Ranges, and Sassafras properties typically carry several of the most problematic ones simultaneously. English ivy, blackberry, sweet pittosporum, English holly (Ilex aquifolium), and sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) are the five species most frequently requiring management on properties we service in the suburb. Each requires a different control approach and a different follow-up schedule. Ivy is the most labour-intensive: cutting the stems at the base to kill the climbing growth, then returning to treat regrowth from the root mass with foliar herbicide. Holly produces berries that birds distribute into garden beds and creek margins, so a single untreated plant generates dozens of seedlings annually. Sycamore maple self-seeds prolifically in the acid soils and is deceptively fast-growing; small plants look innocuous but develop a woody taproot quickly that resists hand-pulling after the first season. The proximity of the Sassafras Creek Nature Conservation Reserve corridor means chemical management needs to be done with buffer zones in mind. We use low-volatility formulations on properties that drain to the creek, and favour cut-stump or stem injection methods within 10 metres of waterways to eliminate drift risk. Weed work in Sassafras is genuinely year-round. The mild temperatures and consistent moisture mean there is no dormant period during which weed growth stops.
