Lawn mowing in Emerald is a different proposition to the flat suburban blocks thirty kilometres to the west. Most residential allotments sit on undulating ground, with slopes running off the main ridgeline along Kilvington Drive toward the creek flats at the Worrell Reserve end of town, and the cool, moist climate means grass keeps pushing well into June and picks up again by late August. On the steeper Avonsleigh-facing sections of the suburb, a self-propelled mower is the minimum; ride-on machines are impractical and cause more compaction and rut damage than they save in time.
