Mulching & Chipping in Cockatoo: Local Conditions and What That Means for Your Property

Cockatoo generates substantial green waste. The combination of large eucalypts dropping bark, dead wood and shed branches, wet winters that push rapid understorey growth, and the general vegetation density on most blocks means there is a near-continuous supply of material that needs to be dealt with. Chip it on-site and it has real value. A 100 mm layer of arborist chip applied to garden beds suppresses weeds, holds moisture through the dry months, and breaks down to improve the clay-heavy soils over two or three seasons. Mountain ash and messmate chip well and the material is clean and fibrous. It also avoids the cost and logistics of carting green waste off steep, access-restricted blocks. Where material can't be processed on-site (large volumes from storm damage or a substantial clearing job), a truck-mounted chipper handles it efficiently. One consideration specific to Cockatoo and the broader Ash Wednesday legacy is that deep mulch against structures and in the asset protection zone can itself be a fire hazard. The general guidance from the CFA is to keep organic mulch away from the building perimeter and ensure it doesn't connect to vegetation. Applying mulch in defined garden beds, kept clear of the house walls, manages this risk sensibly.
