Hedge Trimming in Cockatoo: Local Conditions and What That Means for Your Property

Hedges in Cockatoo span a wide range, from compact pittosporum and photinia boundary screens in the township proper to overgrown lilly pilly, cherry laurel and mock orange that have been left for years on the larger blocks. The combination of reliable winter rainfall around 1,000 mm annually and a cool growing season means hedges put on growth fast here. Pittosporum tenuifolium is common as a privacy screen and will readily exceed four metres if trimmed on anything less than a three-times-a-year schedule. Spring, early summer and mid-autumn is the practical rhythm for keeping it manageable. Photinia needs similar attention: it's a fast-growing species and if left past flowering the new red growth turns away and the hedge gets leggy at the base. A notable challenge on the steeper blocks is simply accessing the top of established hedges safely. Ground levels change across the property, and what looks like a two-metre screen from the driveway side may be four metres tall from the garden below. Ladder placement on sloped ground takes time. Many older properties also have conifer hedges, particularly Leyland cypress, planted as windbreaks in the 1970s and 80s that have grown to six or eight metres and need elevated access equipment for a proper crown reduction. Cutting into old brown wood on conifers won't reshoot, so the work is about managing the silhouette, not restructuring. Native grevillea and callistemon used as informal screens need lighter, selective pruning after flowering to maintain shape.
