Mulching & Chipping in Dandenong: Local Conditions and What That Means for Your Property

Mulching on Dandenong's clay soils performs a materially different function than on the loam soils in the Ranges suburbs. The primary goal here is moisture regulation rather than enrichment. The clay already has adequate nutrient-holding capacity, but the shrink-swell cycle causes bed surfaces to crack open in summer, desiccating shallow plant roots and creating channels for weed seed germination. A 75 mm layer of coarse hardwood chip applied in late September or early October breaks that cycle: it shades the clay, reduces evaporation by around 60 percent in dry periods, and cushions the crack formation. We source the hardwood chip from a certified supplier in the south-east, not from composted urban greenwaste, which on clay soils can compact to a water-impermeable crust as it breaks down. The residential beds on Dandenong's post-war blocks are often edged with old concrete garden edging or brick, which holds the mulch profile well. We top up to 75 mm on each visit and remove any surface weeds before applying. Commercial properties and strata complexes receive the same product on their formal garden beds; some higher-end strata complexes specify a dark hardwood chip for visual consistency, which we can source on request. On-site chipping is available where clients have accumulated pruning waste from hedge trimming or storm damage. We run a PTO-driven chipper on jobs that generate more than two trailer loads of material, and clients can elect to keep the chip for their own beds or have it removed with the load.
