Overgrowth Management in Guys Hill: Local Conditions and What That Means for Your Property

Overgrowth on Guys Hill acreage follows a predictable pattern: spring growth accelerates fast, owners get behind in October and November, and by January they are looking at thick stands of rank grass, blackberry, and bracken that a standard slasher will not handle cleanly. The blocks along the Guys Hill Reserve boundary (the riparian corridor carrying Cardinia Creek) are the most challenging. Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus agg.) is documented by the Cardinia Environment Coalition as a primary weed threat in the reserve, and it spreads from the creek corridor into adjacent private blocks with consistent pressure. Established blackberry canes on a two-hectare lifestyle block can form impenetrable thickets three to four metres across in two or three seasons if not managed. Bracken fern is a secondary concern on the damper low-lying sections of blocks, particularly around dam fringes; it competes aggressively with any pasture species and is unpalatable to horses and cattle. We use a combination of rotary slashing for rank grass, hand-cutting and poison-stump treatment for blackberry canes, and spot herbicide for regrowth. Feral deer pressure noted by the CEC also means replanted areas need protection. Deer will browse back newly establishing native plants immediately. On blocks with remnant Grassy Woodland patches at the boundary, we are careful to identify and work around native ground-layer species before slashing. Phalaris stands on the wetter low areas need cutting before seed set to reduce spread into neighbouring paddocks.
