A Weed ID Guide for the Dandenong Ranges
Seven weeds we see constantly across the hills and the outer south-east, how to tell them apart, why each one is a problem, and their actual legal status under Victoria's Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994. Not every problem plant here is a declared weed, and it matters which is which.
“Declared” vs “environmental” weed: not the same thing
Victoria's Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 declares specific weed species by catchment region, in categories that carry a legal control duty for landowners, regionally controlled weeds being the category most of our declared local species fall into. Many other damaging garden escapes are “environmental weeds” instead: recognised as harmful to bushland by Agriculture Victoria and land managers, but not declared under the Act, so there is no legal obligation to remove them. How we remove them
The right method depends on the species, not a blanket spray. Woody weeds like blackberry and broom are usually cut back and the regrowth spot-treated or dug out at the root crown; climbers like ivy are cut at the base and pulled down from the canopy in stages rather than yanked in one go, which protects the host tree; strappy perennials like agapanthus are dug out whole, since a cut-back clump regrows from the same root mass; and a mature sweet pittosporum, holly or sycamore maple is a removal job we scope with our in-house arborist, since anything beyond a seedling is tree work rather than a weeding job.
